FEATURES IN THE DECEMBER/JANUARY ISSUE

As 2023 draws to a close we can look forward to a break over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. For many of us, this will allow more time with our horses and, in most cases, our dogs too. Thanks to the readers who commented on our Facebook posts about dogs and horses, and older horses, we really appreciate your input and it was a very hard task selecting a few of the lovely photos for inclusion in this issue.
It has been heartening to see recent stats showing even more people are enjoying a break from their computers and reading more printed magazines. We hope this latest issue makes enjoyable holiday reading for you over the next few weeks.
Our team will be winding down a little for the end of 2023 but checking mail and processing subscriptions and gifts, and preplanning features for Hoofbeats 46th year in 2024. We will be back early January to finish off the February/March issue.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
The Hoofbeats Team

Dogs and Horses

With training and positive interactions dogs and horses can not only get on well, there is the potential for them to become good companions and each benefit from the relationship.
Use It Or Lose It - the benefits of structured exercises for senior horses

Just like older people have been shown to benefit from exercise, the overall health and well being of aged horses can be improved when exercise is incorporated into their routine.

Ageing Well

Many horses do not move enough to maintain their health, and this is often the case with older horses, especially when they are no longer ridden. Owners can take steps to not only encourage more movement, but a more enriching environment.

ANXIETY - Understanding the most common problems in horses

Trainer and Clinician Mark Langley explains why understanding why and when horses can become anxious can help with implementing strategies in ourselves and our horses to manage it.

Heat Stress
In our climate it is especially important to be familiar with the signs of heat stress, a condition that is a serious welfare issue and one that can occur in horses in a relatively short period of time.
Heat Exhaustion and the Rider
It is not just our horses welfare that needs to be considered in the heat, riders can also be at risk of heat related illness.

Trail Riding Tips
Trail riding is not only enjoyable for the rider, it offers many benefits to the horse too. There are some things to keep in mind though to ensure it is a positive and safe experience for both.
The All Important Art of Grooming

Grooming should be considered a necessary part of your horses regular routine and offers many benefits, even when you might be pressed for time.

Balance and Self Carriage with Peter Storr

Sharing his considerable expertise at a recent Master Class, this internationally renown rider, trainer and judge stressed the importance of self carriage and lightness to those that attended this informative event.

Equine Law - Horse Traceability

Largely unregulated in Australia, there is no accurate number of horses in the country with PIC codes only providing information where horses are kept.

The Benefits of Stretching Your Horse
Mobilisation exercises offer many advantages, especially when they are performed correctly and on a regular basis to improve strength and flexibility.
